Mljet, Croatia

By Jasmine

We had to wake up early on our last day in Lumbarda to get the bus to Korčula Town. This is where we got the catamaran to our next destination; Mljet.

As we entered the catamaran you could feel the waft of air conditioning......aaahh lovely! This journey was quite short and less than 45 minutes later, we arrived at the tiny port in Pomena on Mljet island.

On arrival at our accommodation, the friendly girl, Josepina, explained that there had been a mix up with the rooms and that the previous guests were refusing to leave until tomorrow. This meant we had to stay in different rooms with dad sleeping on his own in a different hotel. They did give us a free meal though! What a palaver!

Mljet has a beautiful National Park which we visited on our second day. It has 2 lakes and we decided to set up between the two. There was a small channel that connected the two lakes Which was really strange as it had a strong current from one lake to the next. We had great fun swimming as fast as we could with the current and then trying to swim against the current and back to the other lake. The amazing thing was that halfway through the day the direction of the current changed!

Later in the afternoon we hired mountain bikes and cycled around the bigger lake (11km). To complete the lap, we had to take a water taxi with our bikes. In total there were eleven people and ten bikes on a tiny boat. At the end of the ride, we we were exhausted.

Later we got a boat to a tiny island on the lake which had a monastery on it. We were the only people on the boat so the driver let us have a go:

Mljet is a lovely island. Tomorrow we are off again.... to Montenegro!
